KNOWLEDGE IS POWER:
MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT SUPPORT

Every neurodiverse individual deserves respectful, empowering support that honors who they are. Here at Potential On The Rise, our goal is to provide families with balanced, current information about neurodiversity-affirming approaches to therapy and support. This page offers insights into understanding neurodiversity, different therapeutic approaches, and how to choose services that celebrate your loved one’s unique strengths while building practical skills.

Our aim is to help parents and caregivers make informed decisions that align with their values and their loved one’s needs. Effective therapy comes in many forms, and support is most beneficial when it’s personalized, respectful, and implemented with genuine care for the whole person. We hope these resources give you confidence in understanding your options and choosing high-quality programs that fit your family’s values.

UNDERSTANDING NEURODIVERSITY

Neurodiversity is the idea that neurological differences like autism, ADHD, and learning differences are natural variations of the human brain rather than disorders to be “fixed.” This perspective celebrates the unique strengths, perspectives, and contributions of neurodiverse individuals.

Autism, specifically, is a neurological difference characterized by:

  • Unique communication styles and preferences
  • Different social interaction patterns
  • Specific interests and focused attention
  • Sensory sensitivities and preferences
  • Individual learning and processing styles

Key principles of neurodiversity-affirming support:

  • Respect for autonomy: Honoring the person’s choices, preferences, and self-determination
  • Strengths-based approach: Building on existing abilities and interests
  • Acceptance over normalization: Supporting the person as they are, not trying to make them “appear typical”
  • Self-advocacy: Teaching individuals to communicate their needs and preferences
  • Quality of life focus: Prioritizing happiness, wellbeing, and personal fulfillment

ADAPTIVE & SOCIAL SKILLS: OUR APPROACH

At Potential On The Rise, we focus on adaptive and social skills development that empowers individuals to thrive in their daily lives while celebrating their neurodiversity.

What are adaptive skills? Adaptive skills are practical life skills that help with independence and daily functioning, such as:

  • Communication and self-expression
  • Self-care and personal hygiene
  • Time management and organization
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Safety awareness and community navigation

What are social skills? Social skills help individuals build meaningful connections and navigate social situations comfortably:

  • Understanding social cues and contexts
  • Building and maintaining friendships
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation
  • Self-advocacy and boundary-setting
  • Communication across different settings

Our approach is:

  • Person-centered: We start with understanding each individual’s goals, interests, and preferences
  • Strengths-based: We build on existing abilities and natural talents
  • Respectful: We honor each person’s communication style and sensory needs
  • Holistic: We consider the whole person—emotional, physical, and social wellbeing
  • Family-collaborative: We work closely with families to ensure consistency and shared values
  • Flexible: We adapt our methods based on what works best for each individual

OUR SUPPORT PROCESS

Step 1: Getting to Know You Our compassionate clinical team takes time to truly understand your loved one through observation, conversation, and collaboration with your family. We learn about their interests, strengths, challenges, communication preferences, and sensory needs.

Step 2: Collaborative Goal Setting Working together with you and your loved one (when appropriate), we identify meaningful, personally relevant goals that will enhance their quality of life and independence.

Step 3: Individualized Support Planning We develop a completely customized support plan that incorporates your loved one’s interests, respects their autonomy, and uses approaches that feel natural and engaging to them.

Step 4: Ongoing Partnership Our support is flexible and evolving. We continuously check in with you and your loved one to ensure our approach remains effective and aligned with their growth and changing needs.

Step 5: Skill Generalization We help your loved one practice skills in real-world settings—home, school, and community—so they can use their new abilities in all areas of life.

CHOOSING RESPECTFUL EMPOWERING SUPPORT

When evaluating therapeutic services for your neurodiverse loved one, consider these important questions:

About Philosophy & Approach:

  • Does the provider respect neurodiversity and celebrate differences?
  • Do they focus on building skills rather than eliminating natural behaviors?
  • Is the approach strengths-based and person-centered?
  • Do they prioritize your loved one’s emotional wellbeing and happiness?

About Methods & Techniques:

  • Are interventions based on your loved one’s interests and preferences?
  • Do they use positive, empowering methods rather than compliance-based training?
  • Can they explain their techniques in clear, non-technical language?
  • Do they adapt their approach based on your loved one’s feedback?

About Family Partnership:

  • Do they truly value your input as the expert on your loved one?
  • Are you involved in goal-setting and treatment planning?
  • Do they provide training and support for your family?
  • Are they responsive to your concerns and questions?

About Outcomes & Progress:

  • Do they measure progress on meaningful, functional skills?
  • Is the focus on your loved one’s quality of life and happiness?
  • Do they celebrate small wins and individual growth patterns?
  • Are goals personally relevant to your loved one’s life?

UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Applied Behavior Analysis, commonly called ABA, is one of several approaches families may encounter when seeking support. ABA practices vary significantly among providers and clinicians. Families should consider whether a program’s goals and methods respect the individual’s autonomy, communication, emotional wellbeing, and quality of life.

Potential On The Rise does not provide ABA services. We specialize in Adaptive Skills Training and Social Skills Training focused on meaningful life skills, independence, authentic connection, and each individual’s personal goals. Our approach is person-centered, strengths-based, and designed to honor each individual’s identity and way of being.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches:

These methods respect neurological differences while building practical skills in natural, supportive environments:

Adaptive Skills Training: Teaching life skills in functional, real-world contexts that make sense to the individual. This includes everything from self-care routines to community navigation, always building on the person’s strengths and interests.

Social Skills Development: Building connection and communication skills through play, shared interests, and meaningful real-world practice. Focus is on authentic social connection rather than masking or performing neurotypical behaviors.

Sensory Integration Support: Helping individuals understand their unique sensory profiles and develop personalized strategies for managing sensory needs. This includes both accommodations and skill-building for sensory challenges.

Communication Support: Expanding expressive and receptive communication in ways that work for each individual, whether through verbal language, AAC devices, visual supports, or multimodal communication approaches.

Speech and Language Therapy:

Supports communication development across all modalities, with particular expertise in:

  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) for non-speaking or intermittently speaking individuals
  • Pragmatic language skills (social communication)
  • Processing and comprehension support
  • Voice and articulation when relevant to the individual’s goals

Occupational Therapy:

Focuses on daily living skills, sensory processing, and motor development within functional, meaningful contexts:

  • Activities of daily living (self-care, organization, time management)
  • Sensory processing strategies and environmental modifications
  • Fine and gross motor skill development
  • Cognitive strategies for executive functioning
  • Adaptive equipment and environmental supports

Finding the Right Fit

The most effective therapeutic support often combines elements from multiple approaches, tailored to each individual’s unique needs, strengths, and family priorities. Quality providers will:

  • Collaborate with families to identify meaningful goals
  • Respect the individual’s communication style and preferences
  • Use evidence-based practices while maintaining flexibility
  • Regularly evaluate progress and adjust approaches as needed
  • Support the whole family system, not just the individual

OUR JOURNEY: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

We understand that choosing support services can feel overwhelming, especially with so many different approaches and conflicting information. As parents of a neurodiverse child ourselves, we’ve walked this path too.

Our story: When we started seeking support for our son, we explored various therapeutic approaches, always with one goal in mind: helping him thrive while honoring who he is. Through our experiences and deepening understanding of neurodiversity, we discovered that what truly helped our son flourish wasn’t about changing his fundamental nature, but about building his skills while celebrating his unique strengths and perspective.

What we learned:

  • The most effective support honors the individual’s natural way of being
  • Skills are best learned in meaningful, functional contexts
  • Emotional wellbeing and self-acceptance are foundational to all growth
  • Every person deserves to be valued for who they are, not who others want them to become

This understanding shaped our commitment to adaptive and social skills development using neurodiversity-affirming approaches that respect autonomy, build on strengths, and prioritize genuine happiness and wellbeing.
